Improve Orchard Walk
Improve the safety of Orchard walk through installation of CCTV cameras to deter anti social and criminal behaviour.
Why the contribution is important
Orchard Walk has the potential to be a green, enjoyable walkway between Clifton Road and Gordon Road. However it is to be a safe space for criminality as it's 'S' shape allows criminals to hear others coming before they are seen, and the railway arch provides shelter from the elements while waiting for drug dealers. The prevalence of anti social and criminal activity means that some residents of Canbury are afraid to use it as a shortcut to Lidl. For the residents of Orchard Cottages which is on the walk, there is no choice as it is the only route to leave the house, some of whom don't feel safe on their doorstep as a result of this.
There is a high level of community enagagement to support improving the area, and volunteers have already planted shrubs and flowers on open green areas to enhance the area to make it more inviting. Local residents (supported by the council and local MP) have successfully lobbied Network Rail to replace the previous unsightly fence with one which is more aesthetically pleasing. There is a limit to what volunteering efforts can achieve until security is improved though, as further efforts are likely to be ruined by vandals unless there is an active deterrent in place.
