More independent shops

Kingston Council should promote the opening of independent shops in the centre.

One of the ways to do that, could be a tax reduction for independent shops owners and/or for owners of commercial units who rent their space to independent businesses.

Why the contribution is important

Our beautiful centre, destination of thousands of shoppers, has lost its uniqueness and its character because of the presence of far too many chains.


Independent shops offer a more personalised shopping experience and more of a sense of community, attracting more visitors. They often prefer to sell products from more local suppliers, they more directly impact the local economy and they are more mindful of their waste disposal and the environment around them.

    Totally agree and in line with my suggestion for improving both Victoria Road and Surbiton Road in Surbiton.

    Totally agree with this. Independent shops will attract more visitors, boost the local economy, as well as add to the unique character of Kingston. Would also love to see more cross collaboration between current local independents and to see the Council supporting these efforts.
