Improve safety of the pedestrian crossing on Victoria Road where it meets Brighton Road

I have seen so many near-misses on the pedestrian crossing on Victoria Road where it meets Brighton Road, and this crossing is difficult for anyone with mobility issues or a buggy. I would love to see a safety improvement - probably moving the crossing a little further away from the junction, then either introducing traffic lights or replacing the existing crossing with a zebra crossing

Why the contribution is important

Improving pedestrian safety so we can enjoy walking around our neighbourhood even more than we already do

Absolutely agree, this would improve safety and access.

It is very hard to cross from the YMCA side to the Ex Celler side. (And vice versa). Traffic never gives way to pedestrians and you have to dart across when you can, watching for traffic coming from 4 directions sometimes. The island is quite small and not great if pushing a buggy. The zebra crossing further up Victoria Rd is out of the way

This is a very congested area and the highway code now obliges drivers to give way. Heavy delivery trucks need width here too in order to turn into Brighton Road. I have seen many incidences of polite driving at this junction, though not ALL drivers are courteous.

Agreed. As a fit able-bodied person I always feel a hint of risk as I make this crossing. I'm sure it's much worse for folks with walking aids or pushing prams. The highway code may oblige drivers to give way but its not always wise for a pedestrian to put that to the test! Some kind of pedestrian-friendly system, with phased lights or a zebra, is I think needed here now.
