Sensible speed limits

The 20mph blanket speed limit was implemented against popular opinion with a blanket limit chosen rather than implementing appropriate limits (as per the consultation).

Speed limits on the main routes should be restored to 30mph. Highly residential areas / around schools etc should remain at 20mph.

Why the contribution is important

Speed limits need to be appropriate to the road. This means they are more likely to be complied with, leading to a higher level of road safety.

Speed is a major cause of road accidents. Lower speed limits improve road safety by giving drivers more reaction time and reducing accident severity. Maintaining the 20mph limit is crucial for reducing accidents and saving lives

This unrealistic limit is generally ignored, rightly so. Laws deemed generally as inappropriate and therefore ignored bring the law in general into contempt which is bad for society. This law does nothing to improve the generally declining standard of driving. The object isnt to have slower accidents, but not to have them, and no attempt seems to be made to catch wilfully bad drivers.

On the A roads we should restore 30mph. 20 is so widely ignored and unenforceable that it does nothing for road safety but inhibits commerce (when and only when traffic is light).

No, most of Surbiton is residential, it's not the A3. 20mph needs to stay.

I support the 20mph speed limit - if only drivers, motorcycle, mopeds and bikes would stick to it!!

Major roads should be returned to 30mph to help reduce congestion and driver frustration.

Agree with point made by Lady J. Mopeds in particular are always speeding and weaving through traffic. A danger to themselves and others.

    Totally agree.

While I understand that these changes are intended to improve safety, I - and many fellow drivers I’ve spoken with - feel that the blanket reduction from 30mph to 20mph has been taken a little bit too far.

Driving at 20mph on certain main roads feels unnecessarily restrictive, and at times even counterproductive. The sudden and widespread rollout has led to confusion. The inconsistency between roads that remain at 30mph and others reduced to 20mph adds to the frustration and makes compliance more difficult, even for conscientious drivers.
