Stop through traffic in the neighbourhood

Reduce through traffic (or rat runners) on our roads.  Areas such as Tolworth Ward and Berrylands have high numbers of rat runners ripping through our streets, at speed and spitting out pollution, creating a danger for pedestrians and cyclists.  RBK to implement measures to reduce rat running in Tolworth Ward and Berrylands including ANPR.

Why the contribution is important

Surbiton has lots of through traffic in the neighbourhood.  Particularly in Tolworth Ward and Berrylands.  Recent traffic surveys prove we have a through traffic issue.  Mitigations need to be implemented to reduce through traffic.  These can't be single point solutions, but holistic solutions.  ANPR needs to be considered as a way of removing through traffic.  Residents are tired of the air pollution and anti-social behaviour caused by rat runners.  Not to mention the increased risk of injury to pedestrians and cyclists.  RBK needs to act.  We want a cleaner and greener Kingston!!

Fully supportive of this suggestion, something needs to be done

A network of cul-de-sacs, using a blend of hi-tech (ANPR/Bus-gates) and lo-tech (filtering bollards) will deliver cheap and fit-for-purpose safer and healthier streets. All residents will still be able to drive if and when they need and access any place they like by car, while all residents will also be able to walk, wheel and cycle more safely and with less pollution.

Council desperately need to do something and this would help all streets in the area.

Roads are suitable for the high level of rush hour traffic currently coming through, questioning what due diligence was done when permitting expansion to the Red Lion Industrial Park. In addition, traffic coming off A3 should be handled by main junctions, i.e. Tolworth Roundabout, and not allow SatNavs to redirect traffic off prior to save drivers time (coukd be minutes) on their journey. Not to say how dangerous the A3/Fullers Way junction can actually be.

    I am in total agreement.

Of course this makes sense. Kingston have been promoting “clean and green” for a very long time. But all that happens are costly installations ( two in Thornhill Road for example) which do not fulfil these functions .

I would like significant pedestal humps considered on Thornhill Road such as the ones on many other parts of the K1 bus route to slow speeding traffic.

Completely agree and support this. The A3/fullers road junction needs to be closed as it is an accident waiting to happen especially with a large girls schools so close. The ANPR will sort out so many problems; amount of traffic our roads are not built for, rat runners, antisocial behaviour, pollution and safety.
I have lived on Tolworth road for 7 years and the traffic is now ridiculous! I can’t even cross the road when on the school run because of traffic and my daughter was almost run over because one of these rat runners were not looking.
It’s taken the council too long to solve this problem! And now we have large warehouses and their traffic to put up with! I thought there was a ‘Healthy Streets’ initiative??? Sort it out Kingston council and Ed Davey!!!

Issues on Thornhill and Tolworth Roads have been on-going for 3 years and ideas have either not been implemented or not worked. Our roads are unsuitable for the high level of rush hour traffic currently coming through and this is making life a misery for residents. ANPR is a solution that all residents are likely to support and I agree with the proposal.

I agree with this proposal wholeheartedly. This issue has been going on for years and SN Counsellors have made it abundantly clear at previous meetings that they are as fed up with the issue as much as the residents are. However, they are not listening to us and seem to think that we should accept ill-thought out proposals that will not address the issues. We need action now please SN, let's get this implemented and finally put it to rest.

Support!!! Residential streets like Tolworth Rd and Thornhill Rd are not built for the volume of traffic and size of vehicles. Recently even the K1 bus ripped a complete front panel of a parked car. Despite all the evidence that traffic in these streets should be brought back to 'residential only' and despite all the solutions tabled by residents to solve the issues, the council has for now over 3 years not been able to solve this problem. It is time that they show some responsibility, rather than keeping on hiding behind TFL.

Also fully supportive of this suggestion, something needs to be done to deter rat-runners, particularly on Thornhill Road. The regular speed-checks done show high speeds in a 20 mph road, it's not wide enough for large vehicles going down to the estates on Red Lion Road (bad enough having the K1 bus), and the current humps don't deter speeding. A solution involving ANPR and bus gates along with the closure of the A3/fullers road junction is now long overdue.

The ANPR will reduce the huge issues brfacing by faced by residents with the huge volume of traffic that use our roads as short cuts, creating pollution, damage to parked cars and risks to pedestrians and cyclists as well as the anti social behaviour!

I have lived on Tolworth road for 13 years and the traffic is now ridiculous! It takes me a long time to get out of the road during rush hour to drop my son at School in Berrylands.
The council has taken too long to solve this problem!

Fully support measures to find an effective solution to high volumes of through traffic on narrow single width residential streets. It has been too many years with too many excuses and situation is only getting worse and more dangerous!

At last a good idea that may actually work !
  • Posted by dyates January 14, 2025 at 16:54

Need to consider a holistic approach such as ANPR. Something needs to be done as promised.
  • Posted by Whaters January 14, 2025 at 17:15

Totally support!!! Certain times of the day it is impossible to get home! Dangerous driving, speeding and volume of traffic! After 3 years of discussions, residents need to be listened to and we need action!!

Something needs to be done and I fulky support this suggestion.
  • Posted by Vivie January 15, 2025 at 21:25

I’m basically reiterating what I have said several times before.
There needs to be urgent and constructive action for residential roads in the Tolworth ward. Years of lip service and no action have resulted in increases in the volume of rat running vehicles, many of those being HGVs.
Money (££££££) has been spent on raised platforms which make absolutely no difference to the volume or type of vehicles coming down Thornhill Road- which of course anyone with a grain of common sense would have foreseen.
Proper mitigations are needed with follow ups for misdemeanours. Goodness knows, I’ve had fines for accidentally driving down school roads in Chessington and Kingston.

I have lived on Tolworth road for 19 years and the traffic is so bad/ dangerous. It has always been bad, but the last few years have felt very unsafe. It can take 10 minutes to get down the road. The amount of arguments and people threatening each other cause they can't move as there's not enough space to pull into traffic go past. People are using it as a through road from the A3. There's been a number of trials but none of them have stuck. I think it should at least be made one way. Whatever, something needs to be sorted. This is now ridiculous and making us feel unsafe as well as causing damage to cars.
