Tolworth High Street: A Call for Modern Coffee Shops and Better Use of Space

There is a large part of Tolworth High Street that is completely underutilised. For instance, the large building that once housed the “Broadway Bar Café” is now empty and forgotten, with some large items still remaining inside. Its neglected and unused state detracts from the overall appeal of the high street.

I would also suggest that this building, and other areas on Tolworth High Street, could be repurposed to create more coffee shops that cater to women and working professionals. Currently, the only coffee shop of this kind on the high street is Costa Coffee, which, while fine with its lovely and friendly staff, is old, busy, and in need of refurbishment, and there is no variety.

The other cafes are mostly greasy breakfast spots frequented by men, such as builders. There is a clear need for more modern and stylish coffee shops, similar to those on Surbiton High Street.

Why the contribution is important

This idea is important because revitalizing underutilised spaces on Tolworth High Street can significantly enhance the area’s appeal and functionality. By repurposing neglected buildings like the former Tolworth Broadway Bar Cafe, the high street can attract more diverse visitors, including more women and working professionals, who are currently underserved by the existing options. Introducing modern and stylish coffee shops would also contribute to the local economy by attracting new customers and fostering a vibrant community atmosphere, similar to nearby areas like Surbiton.

Such improvements could lead to increased foot traffic, a more inclusive environment, and a stronger sense of community, all of which are crucial for the long-term prosperity of Tolworth High Street.
